Call for Application for “Regional Peer Education Academy 2.0”

  1. Details : Y-PEER Asia Pacific Center is glad to announce the application for the ‘Regional Peer Education Academy 2.0 with support of partner organizations, UNFPA APRO, UNAIDS, APA, IPPF SARO, Youth-LEAD, Me for Myself, UNESCO, CYRC and ARROW to increase the knowledge of Peer Education and SRHR of Young People of Asia Pacific Region. 30 Young People will be selected per batch under the Regional Peer Education Academy. The Academy will be facilitated by the graduates of Regional Peer Education Academy 1.0.

  1. Background : Peer education has been used in many areas of public health, including nutrition education, family planning, substance use and violence prevention. However, the use of peer education in the realm of SRHR and HIV/AIDS stands out because of the number of examples of its use in the recent international public health literature. Because of this popularity, global efforts to further understand and improve the process and impact of peer education in the area of SRHR and HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and support have also increased.  In most societies, young people often find it difficult, especially in the Asia Pacific, to obtain clear and correct information on issues that concern them such as sex, sexuality, substance use, sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, and STIs. This happens for many reasons: sociocultural norms and taboos, stereotyping, economic deprivation, lack of platforms or lack of access to information. Often, information is available but it may be given in a manner that is authoritarian, judgmental, or non-adapted to the young people’s values, viewpoints and lifestyle.  With all these concerns, Y-PEER Asia Pacific Center has been organizing various youth and adolescent engagement activities, workshops, seminars, e-courses, and forums in the region, both face-to-face and using virtual platforms since 2016. Global COVID-19 Pandemic started affecting the livelihood of individuals globally, including their mental, sexual and reproductive health, especially those who are already in vulnerable situations. Online platforms like e-courses have been one of the heavily dependent and most reliable sources of information and capacity-building opportunities for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights of young people (SRHR) among youth advocates in urban areas and those in rural areas with limited internet access. that concerning Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights of young people., online platforms like e-courses have been one of the most reliable sources of information and opportunities to build capacities among youth advocates in urban areas and those in rural areas with limited internet access. Considering the current circumstance and impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on young people in Asia and the Pacific, Y-PEER Asia Pacific with supporting partner organizations (as listed above) started organizing a Regional Peer Education Academy for young people starting 2021. The entire session of Regional Peer Education Academy 2.0 will be facilitated by the graduates of Regional Academy 1.0.
